Daniel Chan, PWC


Daniel is a Partner at PwC, leading the firm's audit work and relationships for charities, higher education institutions and the public sector nationally. He leads PwC's thought leadership for the charity sector as well as the Charities Award and Public Sector Award (in conjunction with the National Audit Office) as part of the PwC Building Public Trust Awards.


Daniel is Chair of the ICAEW Charity Committee, a member of the Charities SORP Committee and a member of the CIPFA Charities and Public Benefit Entities Forum.


‘Walk the talk' on high quality charity reporting.


The session will share perspectives on why high quality reporting by charities matter, the role of the independent examiner or auditor in ensuring this and some practical advice for preparers, independent examiners and auditors.


Kirsten Hogg, SCVO

Head of Policy Research


Kirsten has worked in the voluntary sector for 20 years, representing the views of voluntary organisations and the people they support to government. As Head of Policy and Research at SCVO, Kirsten helped to develop the Scottish Third Sector Tracker, the definitive source of information on the impact of changes on the Scottish voluntary sector.

10:45 Kristina Kopic, Head of Charity and Voluntary Sector, ICAEW


Kristina is a Chartered Accountant who has worked in and for the Not-for-Profit sector for over 15 years. She trained at charity specialists Sayer Vincent and subsequently worked in senior finance roles at the Royal College of Nursing, Imperial College London and the Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts before joining ICAEW in 2020.


Enhancing financial literacy within small charities.


This session focuses on the challenges that independent examiners face when discussing reserves with charity trustees. It will explore how to close the knowledge gap when it comes to fund accounting and reserves policies. We'll discuss how independent examiners can help their charity clients to understand their financial position and build resilience.

Margaret has been involved in charities for all of her adult life: as a volunteer, employee, trustee, independent examiner and adviser - giving a wide ranging and all round view of most aspects of charity administration and finance. She has been a fellow of ACIE for almost 10 years hand prior to that studied for a Postgraduate Certificate in Charity Finance and Accounting.

The session on Gift Aid for Independent Examiners should enable to attendees to provide information on the Gift Aid and Gift Aid Small Donations schemes relevant to Independent Examiners. You should come away from the session with enhanced skills that will enable you to assist your clients to ensure that Gift Aid claims are accurate and that clients are making best use of the schemes.

Ed is a commercial contracts partner at VWV - a full service law firm for which the charity sector is a core focus. Ed advises charities on a range of commercial contracts, from service outsourcing agreements, supply contracts (with the charity as both customer and supplier), and fundraising and sponsorship agreements. Ed is used to advising charities in the context of their charitable obligations and governance requirements, alongside VWVs leading team of charity lawyers.

Laura Anderson, OSCR.

Senior Manager Higher Risk Cases & Quality Assurance at the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator


Laura is the Senior Manager for Higher Risk Cases and Quality Assurance at the Scottish Charity Regulator where she leads teams dealing with a range of complex and challenging casework as well as accounting and annual reporting matters.  Laura is also one of the joint-chairs of the UK Charities SORP Committee and has been involved with the Committee for many years.  Laura trained and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with PricewaterhouseCoopers and worked in private practice until 2007 when she joined OSCR. She is an active member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland.


Update from the Scottish Charity Regulator


A session reflecting on OSCR activity over the past year and also looking ahead. This will include lessons learned from inquiry and accounts scrutiny work, a refresh of OSCR’s Regulatory Priorities and the changes to charity law in Scotland that have recently taken place plus those still to come into force. Scottish charities and those working with and advising Scottish charities will benefit from understanding what has been happening, including where there are new guidance materials to read, plus the legal changes that will be coming up and what can be done to start preparing for those.




Rossa Keown, NICC

Head of Compliance & Enquiries at Charity Commission for Northern Ireland


Rossa was appointed to the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland in August 2021 as Head of Compliance and Enquiries. He is responsible for leading the Commission’s annual reporting regime of all registered charities in Northern Ireland and leading the enquiry function to include investigation of the mismanagement of charities.

The session will give attendees an update on the current position in relation to charity annual reporting in Northern Ireland as we move back into mandatory reporting for all charities. An update will also be provided on how we review account submissions and provide some guidance for Independent Examiners to interact and report issues to CCNI.

Helen’s experience includes setting up, merging, winding up charities; advising on governance, charity tax, and trading activities; advising grant giving charities; trustee training and dealing with a wide range of regulatory matters including OSCR and HMRC related issues.  In addition to fundraising, donations, trusts and endowments, using her private client experience, Helen advises on lifetime philanthropy and legacies/bequests. 


Preparing for partnership - charities and mergers


Helen's session will focus on Scottish charity law, regulatory and practical considerations charities should consider when assessing the merits of merging.  It will also include an oversight of the main legal structures which charities might use and associated key governance reflections.

Helen is a member of the Charity Law Association and an affiliate member of the Society for Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP).

Helen is a Partner and heads up Lindsays’ Charities and Third Sector team in Edinburgh.  Accredited as a specialist in charity law by Law Society of Scotland, Helen has spent over ten years specialising in charity and third sector legal issues.

Charles founded the first Common Investment Fund investing in UK commercial property and also established the first program focused on ongoing education for charity trustees.  Charles is a Trustee of Bowel Research UK, R L Glasspool, a national charity helping people in financial hardship, Prism the Gift Fund, which helps to promote and to facilitate effective charitable giving and sits on the investment committee at the Foundling Museum.
